We're being hosed
Friday, September 05, 2008
The Toronto Sun -- This not what a prime minister heading into an election would wish for.

Today, motorists will be seeing red as they watch pump prices jump even though world crude futures fell to their lowest levels in five months.

For five days, oil prices have been on a retreat, yesterday falling another $1.46 to $107.89 US a barrel for light, sweet crude for October delivery. That's a long way from its record high of $147.27 US on July 11, when motorists were going broke paying almost $1.40 a litre.

This is why DRILLING WILL NEVER AFFECT/RESULT IN LOWER GAS PRICES...

Get a clue people, this has nothing to do with supply; it only has to do with price manipulation.

Anyone remember ENRON ?

When oil goes up they raise the price blaming it on the price of oil. When oil goes down they just stick it to us

No it is not opportunistic greed, it is socialism, and what happens when you have socialist entities in the oil chain, it wreaks havoc on the free market system, since the socialists are siphoning off profits that should go back into improving the production of oil and gas.

We've been getting it in the rear for some time now. Guess what! One of the candidates for election is proposing an additional tax on fuel.

If you confuse the system long enough those that watch will grow tired of trying to figure the system out. If it makes no sense long enough we just stop fighting.

all cost savings should go to the consumer. The government would only return 25 cents on the dollar back to the tax payer. Every beurocrat has to have a piece of the pie.

I agree with NedW. We do NOT need a windfall profits tax. Everyone knows how government works: First we start with a tax on the oil companies--later the tax is extended to include medium sized business--later still it eventually includes your babysitter. In the end the consumer (you) simply pay more.

We do need the government. We just do not need a large and expanding government. Become self-sufficient yourself and not depend on government.

This is clearly price fixing at its highest. Is there no supply and demand balance? That is paying $1.34 a liter here. That's about $4.80 a gallon USA.

We are still being hosed, but not quite as much. The price/litre this morning, Saturday in not $1.235. Still too much considering the price of oil is around $105 which, to me, means that gas should be no more than $1.10/litre-max.

I need to respond to the post by cwbm, who calls for "taxing windfall profits" and anyone who thinks like that. If you have a business and the government comes along and raises your taxes, you have to raise the selling price of your goods and or services accordingly, or you go OUT of business. Which means, the consumer is going to pay more for those goods and services. Why would anyone want to pay more than we're already paying? DAMN! This isn't rocket science.

Reading the article it's a lot of finger pointing. Nobody can prove anything so the consumer continues to take it in the giggy.

As soon as oil per barrel goes up the price is immediate at the pump, BUT when the price falls it takes weeks or months for the price to drop.

The simplest solution and the one where the technology is already established is the whole point of DRILL! DRILL! DRILL!

More REFINERIES must be built away from Costal Areas. Either way we go we well still need more REFINERIES as when the production increase was established to pump more oil out of the ground world wide all the Refineries in the world could not handle the load and therefore we have barges of oil sitting idle for longer periods of time.

While this is being done we should be converting to a Natural Gas use in our country. Which we have the world wide abundance of plus they are already doing this in IRAN and other countries.

We should employ more Wind Farms, use more SOLAR where feasible, explore more use of Geothermal as used in Iceland for decades and develope mining techniques for the ocean floor which holds an abundance of Methane Gas to use.

We do not stand still and only drill and refine oil.

Lets not be so damn MORONIC!!!

The moratorium concerning drilling and exploration in the Legislature expires Sept. 30. Email and phone your 2 Senators and your Congressmen and pressure them to allow drilling and exploration and to disallow any extensions of the moratorium. If you’re unsure of who’s yours are you can find out quickly, as well as how to contact them, by going to the following web sites:

That's true, but only part of the story, plumb. Supply and Demand dictates that oil companies will try to charge as much as they can (and that customers will try to spend as little as they can). Teh stupids drop out of the game. It's annoying, but it's not evil - it's how things get done.
