	Friday, September 05, 2008 Bloomberg -- Sept. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Nissan Motor Co., Japan's third- largest carmaker, reintroduced a diesel-powered vehicle to the domestic market after a five-year hiatus, betting higher gasoline prices will boost demand. Nissan's diesel-powered X-Trail sport-utility vehicle will be priced at 3 million yen ($27,750) when it goes on sale Sept. 18, the company said in a statement today. Nissan aims to sell 100 units of the model a month. Japanese carmakers are bringing out new versions of diesels, which accounted for just 0.1 percent of new car sales in Japan last year, betting that an average 29 percent rise in gasoline prices in the year ended July will spur sales. The new X-Trail SUV, with a 2-liter engine, is 30 percent more fuel-efficient than a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with the same power output. Visit Bloomberg for full article

	(hint to Nissan - psst..., you get 50-percent less diesel fuel from a barrel of oil, than gasoline....)

	Diesel is a good alternative fuel since it takes less to refine it, engines that run on diesel can also run on other fuels and maintenance is much less.

	As long as Japanese diesel prices don't artificially zoom past gasoline prices, it might work.

	Diesel should cost less than gas as it is easier to produce. The refineries are screwing the public but it is still cheaper to operate a diesel engine due to the 30 percent increase in fuel economy.

	Maybe diesel fuel is less costly there than here in the USA.

	Diesel-power is not attractive now, but in a few years when cooking oil replaces the oil based fuel, it may make a small difference.

	The new diesel engines are much improved from a few years ago. However the refiners, seeing an increase in usage have increased the price to more than gas, which was not the case a year or so ago. Hosed again.

	I would love to see more diesels, they typically are 20% to 40% more efficient than a spark ignited gas engine.

	Assuming diesel costs more than gasoline in Japan like it does here I don't see a lot of incentive to buy one.

	With diesel running at least 75 cents more than regular gas at the pump, I fail to see the advantage.

	Need as many alternatives we can have. Though diesel is more expensive, a comparable diesel car can get more mpg. And the diesel engine has been traditionally more durable.

	What are the reliability figures on this engine? Ford has major problems with their 6 cylinder.

	Diesels are more expensive then gas powered vehicles and when they break the parts a very expensive to replace. The current pricing of diesel is about 10% higher then gas. The fuel economy is about 30% better then gas. You have to figure which is more economical. The higher initial investment, the higher cost for diesel. You may have to drive your diesel 150,000 before you start seeing a savings.

	as long as it gets 40-50mpg then it will be a good buy. However the price of the vehicle may still negate that.
