I can see that natural gas or electric will become more common once we begin to develop HOME refueling connections. This only becomes difficult if you drive more than a handful of miles each day, plan on more extensive highway driving, or have capacity to run about the same distance on your fuel source that a conventional fuel tank has now.

It will take a combined, proactive approach from both the automakers and fuel distributors to develop the infrastructure to provide these alternative fuels to make them attractive to both the retailer and consumer alike, which won't happen without a definitive need. Unfortunately even in today's political climate, there is no need since we still have good ol' oil flowing (no matter the cost) and too many regulatory hands are in the pockets of the oil producers.

No matter what the fuel source, the market will still dictate that we will be paying 20-40 cents per mile for this energy to run our vehicles.

Comfort,, is what I am looking for not economy..

Looking for CHANGE in the gas price, but just like the dysfunctional President and Congress we have there is no CHANGE!

From HOPE AND CHANGE to HOPE THERE IS CHANGE !

I don't know whether it's a standard feature on many new cars and trucks, but I see a lot more now that are identified as flex-fuel. It's likely that will become more common. With the immense infrastructure costs to adopt electric or natural gas, it will be years before they will become commonplace. Electrics are still limited by what limited them in the first place...battery capability. Until we come up with a better battery, electric cars will remain a novelty vehicle for city dwellers. Natural gas is even less available than propane. Conservatives will hate reading this, but until there are subsidies for these alternatives, they will not reach their potential. Do you know any corporations raring to get into the business of providing charging stations or natural gas refueling stations? I don't. So flex-fuel will probably be what powers my next car or van (whichever gives up the ghost first). A hybrid might be an alternative for me, but there are still issues with the cost of replacing the batteries. I prefer to drive a car into the ground, so I know it would be at my expense.

Electric. The question doesn't specify near or distant future. I would say electric in the distant future like over 10 years. If they can make them to go longer distances at a lower price, I think they will eventually replace gasoline engines.

Flex-fuel will be the way to go. I do too much high way driving to use either a hybrid or electric vehicle. Diesels still stink. I am afraid with the increase of natural gas vehicles, the price of the fuel will rise sharply

We have more natural gas now than ever. Priced at a all time low. What happened to these natural gas truck stops that were making big news across the country last year. It seems gasoline will always drive the American automobile. The gasoline producers and the government will make sure of it.

I was going to choose diesel, but then reality set in. Unless hell freezes over or I win the lottery I will be driving my same old clunkers until their wheels fall off. Then I will probably buy another used vehicle, so it will also be gasoline powered.

Whatever happened to the idea of solar powered vehicles? Maybe we can invent a combo solar- and wind-powered vehicle so we could drive for free in any weather!

Already have a diesel which is pretty efficient and the engine itself will last a long time - not contribute to junkyard crowding
In the future, I would like an electric which can also be charged with solar panels. I have seen various ones for quite a few years in the solar competitions which drive all the way across the US. So far these are only prototypes and for one person with almost zero cargo - but there is hope!
In the meantime, I am looking at small high mileage options for around town.

If I have the money, which I probably won't, then I want my next car to be a Tesla. If you look at their upcoming Model S, you see there's not much downside except for long distance road trips--you'd have to plan where to charge. But hopefully more charging stations will be installed sooner rather than later. Let's move to renewable-power-charged EV's ASAP. Dirty old internal combustion engines are clunky and obsolete.

Diesel makes the most sense now. CNG and hydrogen fuel cells may make sense down the road a little.

Hard to say, since I'm probably about 5 years from another new car purchase, but I'd say hybrid, specifically a plug in hybrid, if the price has moderated enough by then.

Most likely for me it will be a diesel. We just bought a new car and the truck is a 2003. I tow a good bit and I like the extra power of a diesel. The cost of fuel is more but the truck is not a daily driver.

Frankly, I will be looking for comfort NOT fuel efficiency..
Too late for me to be worrying about saving a few pennies for the future as the future is here now and I am living it to the fullest.. But I do like my comfort !!

Time to get on my Motorcycle and burn up some more GAS and CREATE some more of those harmful emissions so that the ozone get destroyed and I can increase GLOBAL WARMING !!

BTW I HAVE A VERY COMFORTABLE MOTORCYCLE !! In case you wondered !!
