"The fastest" on paper is not always the fastest depending on traffic and time of day. I will frequently stray around a major metro area if I am approaching it during rush hour because the longer drive will be faster than sitting in traffic.

If going cross county, I frequently take the old US routes instead of the Interstates. If shorter duration, I go for the fastest way usually.

If you have your stops planned out and hotel/motel reservations in place, the fastest is usually the best. Get to where you need to be and then rest. BUT...we have this beautiful country of ours that so many people take for granted way too often. If time is not of the essence, the most scenic would be my choice because it would give me and my kids the opportunity to really appreciate what a magnificent landscape God in his wisdom has provided for us.

You forgot an important one:
route with fewest construction delays!
last weekend, on our way back to Mpls from Springfield, IL, an unlisted construction area on interstate 90 between Beloit and Janesville (12 mILes) took 90 minutes! YUK!

When travelling from outside Toronto east to Quebec city one not only has to plan on a direct route but avoiding 2 rush hours. Same argument for driving west to Chicago with Detroit along the way (go over the top at Sarnia).

For my commute, the shortest is not the fastest - the shortest route is 18km one way but goes through residential sub-divisions with many traffic lights. The fastest route is 4km longer but is more rural and therefore fewer stops - saves me 5-10 mins each way over all

It looks to me like someone at gasbuddy.com needs to put (or at least use) spell check on their questions. "Likley?" What kind of word is that? Has someone gone to the Dan Quayle Skool of Spelng?

A combination, or it depends on what I am doing! The shortest and cheapest for errands and when I need to get from A to B-as Flyboy says, no reason to give the oil companies any more than we need to. However on a yearly vacation we also do a lot of scenic and backroad driving, off the beaten path. A lot of times we hardly ever see anyone else on these beautiful drives. It's a shame so few travel the backroads, because we have seen so many unique and interesting places in this country....I wish more Americans were willing to explore our land and see the places that have shaped out history, rather than spending time in canned entertainment places where people act like sheep being fleeced of their hard-earned dollars!

For a long trip, I generally choose the Interstate, but like to have a scenic ride at the start and end of a trip. Especially at a new destination, it's nice to take the 2-lane highway near the end and see the area.

This is a good question. The combination I would choose would include not only the fastest, shortest, least congested. It would include most scenic because driving has always been an expensive choice. Here in the United States we have had the good fortune to enjoy less expensive fuel for as long as we have operated automobiles, even today, when we check prices around the world. The United States is the largest market for fuel, and as such, we have the power to effect the prices asked for fuel. If each of us would plan our trips including our fuel requirements and purchaces, we could lower the extravagant prices asked of us for fuel. If we just proceed as stupidly as we have, we will enrich the oil companies even more.
The oil companies set the prices they ask for fuel by considering how willing we are to go somewhere other than where we usually buy from. They don't care about our not buying fuel on certain days, or from certain stations/companies. The only way we can diminish what we pay out for fuel is to buy from none other than whoever is leading the "lower priced" list. This will cost the price of the trip to that station. Many of us point out that we "waste" money, fuel, and time going to the least expensive station in our town/metropolitan area. To those who are so shortsighted I must point out that only a few months ago we were asked more than a dollar less for a gallon of fuel. Does anyone believe the reasons for the higher asking price offered by the oil companies? We must recognise that our media are supported by advertising, and are thus profiting by their advertiser's increased share of our money. We have shown the oil companies that we care so little for our time and effort, which what money is, that we just fill up where we always fill up, and somehow feel used when when we find ourselves with little of our money left.
Our nation's economy has tripped over the shoelace of fuel prices and is staggering dangerously. My father worked at a small town weekly newspaper before the great depression of last century, and told me that just before the stock market crash, stock prices had inflated and where changing up and down.
We must conduct ourselves to make our money go as far as we can. Only very rarely do I see anything praising the real virtue of "Yankee Ingenuity," or individual resourcefulness, or anything about anyone who dares to do anything than what the rest of the herd is doing. We seem to have forgotten that we are free people in a free country. We would rather do nothing but what the advertisers command, and mock anyone who dares to do anything else. After I see a news reporter report the even higher asking price as if we have no choice, they add some crack about some being different, or that we are powerless before the price setters.
We are met on this site which can liberate us from the oppressive prices asked of us if we would only do what what Americans have until recently been known for doing, whatever we want. I only buy fuel from the least expensive station around.

It depends on where I/we are going, how much time is available, etc.. Normally the fastest is what is choSEn--eg. Interstate highways. I think I voted shortest, thinking it was also the fastest, it might or might not be. If I am travelling alone, and time is not a factor, and it is daytime, I may take a route just becauSE it is there and takes me in the general direction I am headed. If time is a factor, then yes, the fastest route. I guess it also depends on the definition of a long trip. We don't consider a trip to SE Kansas a long trip, even though from OKC it is a four hour drive. This last weekend we went to KC, that took longer of courSE, but it really wasn't that long, not like coming to SEK from Winston-Salem, NC. Or if we had driven to Florida instead of flying. In answer to 'yelobus' and the Interstae Highways, we take them in the interst of time at destination, not needing to "take time to smell the flowers" What gets irritating is the one who thinks they own the road at 10-15 mph OVER the posted speed limit. They want you out of their way now, not later.

For family trips crossing the desert,I always choose routes with service stations and rest stops. For fun trips to the middle of nowwhere the shortest route is the best. For trips to out-of-town relatives, scenic routes are mandatory. For work related trips, fastest routes are best.

The answer is that it depends. If I have time and the "trip" is the reason for the travel, I like to check out the "scenic route" and the points of interest along the way. If the point of the drive is to get to a destination by a particular time and/or to maximize my time with friends and relatives, the its the fastest route (avoiding known points of irritation such as rush hour around Chicago).
The time of day and the weather also dictate which is the choice. I don't want to be traveling through East Overshoe in the middle of a snowstorm in the middle of the night.
The type of vehicle also contributes to the choice. We take blue highways (scenic route) when taking a sport touring sedan. Taking our RV to a destination (and points of interest along the way) would lead to a combination of Interstate and blue highways near the destination.
