Cubb, as long as you're going to make unsupported asserions about waste disposal, I'll make the opposite assertion and say that there is a safe way.

Oppose ... there is no safe way to dispose of nuclear waste. i.e. spent rods.
We need to use other alternative sources ... like wind farms and solar arrays.

Yes. The government has really screwed up nuclear power by their inefficient licensing process and by failing to build a spent fuel repository on a timely basis. The government needs to help the first few new plants through the process (while maintaining safety).

ə "nuclear" as in _fission_, no, no money is needed there. that is about as efficient as it will get unless we create a new transuranic element with a short half-life that gives off abundant energy but decays into something harmless. where we should concentrate our research is in _fusion_. if we make that work, our electrical needs are no more as we will have all the electricity we want, and cheaply. ə

twowheel, you're really overstating the spent fuel storage requirement.

All the government needs to do is provide safety and a place to store spent nuclear fuel for the next million years.

Nuclear power can produce the electricity (without greehouse gasses) needed for hybrids, electric cars, and hydrogen manufacture.

The only government involvement needed is to find a permanent place to store spent fuel for the next few thousand years.

Yes. But saying something is safe does not by itself make it so.
And it is ALL about risk management and safety and economics.
Study "Admiral Rickover" the "father of the nuclear navy".

The government should be involved for public safety considerations only including the storage of spent nuclear fuel.

I would favor research in how to neutralize the after products FIRST before starting any more plants. We have already witnessed what can happen if we do not do due diligence first BEFORE we act irresponsibly and have another disaster! 10s of 1000s of lives (not counting nature too) are NOT worth saving any amount of money!

Favor nuclear power, oppose government promotion. The only thing the government needs to do to promote anything, is to simply get out of the way. Thanks, LOTRfan1. You, by far, have the most thoughtful response to this hot-button issue.
Fear of nuclear power appears similar to the fear of flying. Regardless of their spectacular failures, they are the safest way to go. It's a risk management issue.
