DCD, if you can beat $52.73 for that 5-wire O2 sensor, please let us know...

"Why? Did your car throw up a "check engine light"? Otherwise leave it alone."
Do you keep track of your mpg? A decline in mpg should be the first clue something is not functioning correctly.

CiVX,
If your O2 sensor is the one with 5 wires made by Bosch, I can help to check it. Such kind of sensor is widely used in our DCD products. And I can give you the clue to buy cheaper ones under $100.

Unless you are having issues or warning lights, I would not be too worried.

I realize that year car has the old OBD1 computer in it, but unless you got a light on the dash saying "service engine soon", I'd not worry about it. Usually, Autozone (or similar shops) will run a test on the computer for free, and it'll tell you what's possibly wrong

Some vehicles recommend changing O2 sensors at 100K miles. I am a firm believer in that. I replaced mine in a Ford Ranger and I noticed the increase in power before I got to the end of a short driveway. Also a 15% increase in MPG. BTW - there wasn't an O2 code present. My brother told me to replace them after I told him about the decrease in power and MPG.

I have a 1992 toyota 4 runner and changed my o2 sensor and my mileage went way up! I guess it was so burnt out the light didnt even come on anymore and on top of it I found it on amazon for 70 dollars less than orielly's.... I noticed that it idles better also so if you are worried about an expensive sensor look on amazon!

if you had clicked on my 2nd link, you'll see that the OP had the check engine light & has a "lean burn" condition... the sensor is most likely worn out and not creating a "closed loop"
meaning the vehicle will run rich and waste gas most of the time, it's running "open loop" with preset air: fuel mixtures from the ECU/ECM

I have seen cars run with their oxygen sensors unplugged and not throw a code so don't go by that.
If you have over 70,000 miles on that sensor you might want to think about changing it, if you have over 100,000 miles its likely barely functional.

If your car runs fine, don't touch it.

if it's the original one, you most likely will need a new sensor
you can rent a special deep socket with a cutout on the side from any local autoparts store for free (just pay for the tool & get a full refund when you return it)
I found one for as low as $52.73 plus shipping/handling
standard motor products part # SG335
2-year warranty & has the Original Equipment style plug on it with 5 wires
