I also go 6-7,000 miles between oil changes. Use Mobil 1 now but hear Amsoil is better. Any comments on synthetics?

Any comments on synthetics?

I use Mobil 1 0W-40. It's API SL, SM, SN. It's ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4. These are all rare combinations. It's also BMW Longlife 01, Mercedes Benz 229.5. It used to be GM-LL-A-025 but now GM has a more lax Dexos standard, which it is.

Shop for performance specifications, not marketing buzzwords. Use of synthetic manufacturing techniques does not automatically give a motor oil the magic properties which some synthetic motor oils posses. Doesn't matter, Group IV, V, VI, ester, PAO, etc. Those are techniques, not performance specifications.

Do some homework on synthetic oil. There are four types. Some have great viscosity and wear ratings when they first poured in your car, yet drop off significantly before you have driven 3,000K (see Royal Purple). Others, like Amsoil or Red Line, with the proper filtration (emphasis mine), can last six months to a year depending on severity of miles driven. It is also worth the $25-30 for an oil analysis. The test will tell you whether you need to change your oil or if you have other issues concerning higher than ordinary wear levels occurring in your engine.

Change it every 5,000 km (3,125 mi) and have had zero issues. Word of warning: if your car is older and has always had conventional oil, switching to a synthetic may cause your baby to spring leaks. The detergents in the synthetics often clean your engine too well and can expose flaws the conventional gunk buildup was hiding. So unless you have a good (read: non-American) engine with a high double digit odometer, you might want to stick with the devil you know - or be prepared to spend a bunch more.

Chevron Lubricants, maker of the Delo brand of engine oils, lubricants and coolants, said it recently conducted benchmark testing to determine how its premium conventional heavy-duty motor oil, Delo 400 LE SAE 15W-40, performed against major oil companies’ semi-synthetics. Test results showed that Delo 400 LE with Isosyn Technology was equal to, if not better than, leading semi-synthetics in industry-recognized tests in the areas of wear control, oxidation and deposit control, according to the company. Message avoid the blends or semi sythetics. .
